Dave Farley was the valedictorian for the BHS Class of 1960. He participated in cross country, basketball, and most notably, track & field. Farley was the starting guard for the 1959-60 State Class LL runner up basketball team, coached by fellow Brewer Athletic Hall of Fame Inductee, Larry Mahaney. 

While at Brewer High School, Farley was twice State mile and half mile champion and state and BHS record holder in both. He was the first Maine high school athlete to run a mile under 4:30, running 4:26.3 in 1959, and was also 2nd in the 1959 New England mile in 4:25.1—still a BHS mile/1600 record after 55 years. Also in 1959 he placed 5th in the US National Junior AAU mile in 4:25. 

Farley attended Brown University where he ran cross country and track and set 5 freshman and 8 varsity records. He twice won the IC4A (all Eastern US Div. 1 universities) mile—4:13.7 indoors in 1963 and 4:06.6 outdoors in 1964. He was the freshman New England cross country champion and ran the 2nd fastest freshman indoor mile in the nation in 4:13.7. Farley was the captain of Brown’s 1963 cross country team which finished 12th in the NCAAs. 

Upon graduating from Brown in 1964 with a degree in Classics and English, Farley joined the US Marine Corps Officers Candidate Program; he attained the rank of captain and served a tour of duty in Vietnam and competed on the Quantico Marine track team. As a Marine, he finished 7th and 9th in the US National Championships in 1965 (mile) and 1968 (1500 meters) respectively. He qualified in the 1500 meters in the 1968 US Olympic Trials and finished 11th

Farley is also a member of the Brown University Athletic Hall of Fame and the Maine Running Hall of Fame. 

His all-time personal records include: 4:04.7 mile, 1:50.3 half mile, 49.3 for 440 yards, 3:45 for 1500 meters, and 2:45 Boston Marathon. 

In 1968, Farley joined Fleet Bank in Providence, RI, as a management trainee and progressed over the next 30 years through various management positions in human resources, bank operations, acquisition integration, and executive vice president in Portland, Maine, Boston, NYC, and Philadelphia. 

Dave Farley and his wife, Pat (Wood) Farley, BHS ’62, live in Chocorua, NH, and have 3 sons and 7 grandchildren. Pat also graduated from Brown in 2001, at the age of 57 majoring in archaeology and anthropology; she has participated in various archaeological excavations including in Petra, Jordan, and at NH paleo-indian and colonial sites.
