Amy Freeman, 2004, Soccer, Basketball, Softball

Amy Freeman, a 2004 graduate of Brewer High School, was an outstanding three sport athlete excelling in soccer, basketball and softball. She earned her varsity letter in each sport all four years. Her leadership skills were extraordinary as she was the captain of each team her senior year. In addition to her dominating presence on the athletic fields and court, Freeman excelled in the classroom. She was a high honors student receiving her academic letter all four years and was inducted into the National Honor Society as a Junior. Exemplifying what it means to be a student-athlete, Freeman graduated earning the esteemed Brewer High School Superintendent’s Award and the Leslie M. Ohmart Athlete of the Year Award.

Freeman was a masterful guard on the basketball court for four years. During her sophomore year, the Brewer Team was known for their speed and creative defensive tactics. They were able to upset Waterville in the first round of playoffs due to a play by Freeman. She was named a Big East Conference honorable mention that season. Due to her character on and off the court, she earned the Big East Conference team sportsmanship award that year as well. As a Junior, the team dominated Bangor twice on the Rams’ home court. This was the first time in over a decade the Witches had come out on top of that rivalry.

On the softball diamond, Freeman commanded the shortstop position her freshman and senior years while holding down second base during her sophomore and junior seasons. She helped lead the team to a 3rd place finish in the MPA Eastern Class A playoffs in 2001 and 2002. The team’s success on the softball field continued to build in 2003 earning the Eastern Maine Class A Runner-up title. In the finality of her high school athletic career, she propelled the team to an Eastern Maine Class A Championship title and runner-up at the Class A Maine State Softball Championship in 2004. Freeman was named Penobscot Valley (PVC) All-Conference Second Team for second base in 2002 and First Team in 2003. In addition to the team’s triumphant accomplishments, Freeman was individually named to the Maine Softball Coaches Association All-Star Team, PVC All-Conference First Team shortstop and PVC All-conference Player of the Year.

Through soccer, Freeman was awarded the PVC All-Conference honorable mention during her freshman year for her work as an outstanding goalie which included an impressive 24 saves during a game against Bangor. She remained an exceptional defensive player during the next three years while playing various positions.

After graduation in 2004, Freeman was recruited by Coach Craig Dagan at Maine Maritime Academy to play basketball. She started as a freshman and finished that season with the second highest free throw percentage on the team. Freeman’s efforts aided in her team’s crusade to win the conference championship with an overall season record of 24-5. That is an 82.7% winning percentage, one of the highest in the Mariners’ history. This propelled them into the NCAA Division III Women’s basketball championship tournament. She then transferred to the University of Maine to finish her studies, where she graduated with her Bachelor of Science in Accounting in 2009. Freeman earned her Master’s in Business Administration at Husson University in 2011.

Freeman has continued to live and work in and around the Brewer-Bangor community since graduation. She works in the banking industry and holds the current role of Vice President Assistant Credit Manager at Bangor Savings Bank. She has served as a volunteer assistant girls’ Varsity Basketball coach for several years and also tutors the athletes off the court when they are struggling with their school work. She completed the Bangor Region Leadership Institute in 2012 and has volunteered her knowledge and leadership skills for several organizations notably as a member of the Board of Directors for Penobscot Community Healthcare, the Finance Cabinet Chairperson for the United Way of Eastern Maine, and the Fund Development Chairperson for Big Brothers, Big Sisters of Mid-Maine.

Over four years, Amy Freeman emerged well-grounded academically, a skilled athlete in three sports and a solid leader. She is very deserving of induction into the Brewer High School Athletic Hall of Fame.
