Dan Coombs was a standout baseball and basketball player at Brewer High School.  

In basketball, Coombs played for Coach Larry Mahaney (2014 Brewer Athletic Hall of Fame Inductee). During Coombs' junior year, he made the Maine All-State Basketball Second Team. Coombs was the first 1000th point scorer in school history, accumulating 1152 points over his high school career.  Six hundred and fifty seven of those points came during his senior year (350 his junior year and 145 his sophomore year).  Also during his senior year, Coombs guided the Witches through the Eastern Maine Championship Tournament scoring 104 points in three games. In the Class State A game he scored 35 points and was named the tournament M.V.P.  For his outstanding accomplishments, he was named to the Maine All-State Basketball First Team.  

In addition to his basketball skills, Coombs was also the star pitcher on the baseball team. He was known for his overpowering fastball and devastating curveball.

After graduating from Brewer High School in 1960, Coombs attended Seton Hall University on a basketball scholarship from 1960 to 1962. While at SHU, Coombs was noticed by baseball scouts and was subsequently drafted by the Houston Colt45’s in 1962.  Coombs made the major league roster for Houston in 1964.  He also played for the San Diego Padres and finished the 1970 season with a career year, going 10-14 on the mound in 188 innings with a 3.30 ERA, good for 9th in the National League.

Dan Coombs compiled a lifetime MLB record of 19-27 with a 4.08 ERA.

After leaving pro baseball, Coombs received a B.S. degree in Education from the University of Houston in 1974. He taught and coached in the Houston School system for 28 years coaching basketball, baseball and football.  While there, his basketball teams won three district championships and one city championship in three years.

In addition to his nomination in the Brewer High School Athletic Hall of Fame, Coombs was also inducted into the Maine Basketball Hall of Fame in 2014. In 2012, Coombs was celebrated as the City of Brewer Bi-Centennial Athlete during the 200 year celebration of the City of Brewer. In 1997, Coombs was inducted into the Maine Sports Hall of Fame. In 1970, Coombs was awarded the State of Maine Governors Trophy which recognized the State of Maine's most outstanding athlete for the year.
