Jeff Lynn
Jeff Lynn
Title: Student-Athlete; Swimming
Year: 1988

During his four year high school swim career as a Brewer Witch, Jeff Lynn was regarded as one of the best swimmers in the State of Maine. Lynn was a two-event Penobscot Valley Conference and two-event State Champion for all four years of high school.  Lynn set P.V.C. meet records in 100 yd. freestyle (:49.5), the 200 yd. freestyle (1:46.58), and the 500 yd. freestyle (4:49.15) as well as the 100 yd. butterfly (55.3).  Lynn’s 1987 P.V.C. 500 yd. freestyle swim, an event he won by 35 seconds (nearly two lengths of the pool ahead of the 2nd place finisher), marked the first time in P.V.C. history that a swimmer broke the 5:00 mark. Lynn’s record in the 200 yd. freestyle of 1:46.58 was one of the most formidable P.V.C. records of all time standing on the record books for over 25 years until it was ultimately broken in February of 2014.

Although freestyle was his forte, Lynn, steadily established himself as one of the top butterfliers in the state.  At the 1988 Class A State Championships, Lynn set meet and state records not only in the 200 yd. freestyle (1:45.36) but also in the 100 yd. butterfly (:53.29).  Due to his record setting swims, Lynn was named the 1988 Class A Swimmer of the Year, an accomplishment Lynn holds in high regard.  Lynn’s motto his senior year was “8 for 8 in 88”; referring to his 8 state championship gold medals won over his high school career.  Lynn was also a three time recipient of the Harold Paulson Award which is given to the Outstanding Swimmer of the Meet as voted by the coaches and officials at the Boys’ Class A State Meet.

In 1987, Lynn was named as one of USA Today’s “Faces to Watch”.  In each of his four years of high school swimming, he was named to the Maine State All-Star Team and made the National Interscholastic Swim Coaches Association Top Ten list in multiple events.  By Jeff Lynn’s senior year, he held five of eight individual swimming school records.  As of 2014, he still holds four of those records as well as two relay records.

While at Brewer High School, he was an honor roll student and an exceptional role model.  Although Lynn trained for swimming year round, accumulating hundreds of thousands of yards per season, he was also a Brewer varsity soccer player all four years of high school.  Jeff Lynn credits much of his success to not only his parents but his long time age group and high school coach, Tim Babcock, for his excellent preparation as well as inspiring and motivating him to be the best that he could be in school and in the pool.

After high school, Jeff Lynn went on to letter in swimming at the University of Maine.  After he left U-Maine, Lynn began a career in the construction business.  Presently, he operates a concrete and masonry company.  Still a role model in athletics, Lynn is also part of a group of volunteers who manage a sports complex for 3,500 youth that exposes kids to a wide range of sports: football, soccer, baseball, softball and cheering.  Lynn lives in Lithia, Florida (near Tampa) with his wife Annette and daughters Madison, a superior fast pitch softball player, and McKenna, a gifted “brown belt” athlete in the martial art of Aiki-jujutsu.
