Amy Winchester
Title: Student-Athlete; Track & Field, Basketball and Soccer
Year: 1992

Amy Winchester is widely regarded as the greatest female athlete to graduate from Brewer High School since female sports have come under the control of the Maine Principal's Association.  She starred in 3 sports for 4 years; soccer, basketball and outdoor track & field.  She was on All-State teams in both basketball and soccer, but her best sport was track & field.  She won 5 State championships, 2 each in the shot put and discus and one in the javelin. Winchester was such a great athlete that she was on the 4 x 100 team that won the PVC championship and placed 3rd in the State meet.

Winchester was a "powerful athlete; big, strong, but incredibly quick, with great speed, a rare combination" according to Coach Jeffrey.  "Her school records in all three throws are so far beyond any other BHS athletes, that it is amazing" he added. Her accomplishments have stood the test of time. Not only was she an exceptional athlete, but Amy was inducted into Girls' State and elected President of the Senate, which is a testament to her overall body of work as a student-athlete.

Amy went on to Dartmouth College and had a great career, culminating in placing at the Division 1 championship her senior year, and qualifying for the Olympic trials in the shot put.  During her time at Dartmouth she won 9 individual Heptagonal championships; shot put 6 times (3 Indoors and 3 Outdoors), the discus 2 times and the weight throw once.  She also set the Dartmouth school record in the shot put 50-10.5”, which still stands today.  She is second all time at Dartmouth in the discus with an amazing throw of 156'8”.

After college, she taught English in Japan and traveled in Asia. Upon coming back to the U.S., she started a career in publishing in Seattle. She has lived in Boston, North Carolina, and finally resides in Maryland. Her husband, Trevor Dodman, is an English professor at Hood College and they have 3 young children—all of whom have gotten an early start in a variety of sports. Amy coaches them in soccer and basketball. Amy Winchester, at the time of her induction, was a graduate student working on her Master's in Business Administration.
